Painting Flowers in Oil and Acrylics

NEW! For beginners and continuing painters. Explore different techniques for painting flowers using value, color, and mark making. Each class will focus on a different subject and technique to help you build new skills to tackle your paintings at home. The instructor will provide step-by-step instruction in each class. Block Printmaking Workshop (Weekend)

Make a block print from beginning to end. Learn about composition and color selection. Design your print on a block. Move on to design carving and finally create a monoprint using black ink. Materials included.

Block Printmaking Workshop

Columbia Art Center / One day workshop / January 14, 2024 / 9 am - 3 pm

In this workshop, make a block print from beginning to end in one day. Draw your print design on the block after considering composition and color, followed by design carving, and finally print using your favorite color ink. This will be a monotone print, size 4x6 or 5x7.

Approaches to Color

Howard County Art Center / 4 session class / Jan 25- Feb. 15, 2024 / 6:30 - 8:30 pm

In this 4 session workshop learn how to approach color in your paintings by exploring color theory. This workshop is more about the exploration of color and it’s properties than a finished painting. Learn the basics of the color wheel; hue, chroma, and value. Learn to use a limited color palette to change the feeling of your paintings and harmonize colors. Students will make color charts to explore the relative lightness and darkness of different colors and investigate different tools to apply paint. Oil and Acrylic painters are welcome.

Drawing Basics

Content: Amanda will be demonstrating the use of a notan drawing to compose the lights and darks of her subject and translate the design using an alla prima painting technique.

How to Paint Birds

In this 3 session course, learn techniques on how to paint birds using a step-by-step process. Learn to draw birds with simple shapes, apply masses of color, and address details. How to Paint Bulb Flowers

Designed for beginners and continuing students. Learn techniques for painting bulb flowers using a step-by-step process. Landscape Painting Class

Designed for intermediate acrylic and oil painters. In this six week class, focus on landscape painting by exploring different exercises for simplifying information and incorporate techniques for atmospheric perspective. Photos of scenes will be projected onto the wall for you to paint. Teacher demonstrations and discussion of composition and paint application will be included. Note: this is a structured class, not open studio.

Students will learn the fundamentals of painting outside on location ‘en plein air’. We will review materials, composition, simplifying the subject, as well as color and value. The instructor will also discuss materials needed in a quick draw competition like framing techniques and wet painting transportation.
