WELCOME TO AMANDA’s HOME STUDIO

A B O U T T H E A R T I S T

Amanda Milliner is an award winning, professional oil painter. She paints in a representational style from life, both outdoors and in her home studio located in central Maryland. The artist has been showing her work for over 20 years and is known for her use of vibrant colors and modern impressionist painting techniques. Amanda strives to describe everyday scenes with her own impressions of color and light.

Milliner holds a BFA from The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore. She has studied both classical and high renaissance art history, on location in Florence, Italy at Studio Art Centers International (SACI). She shows her work regularly and is an active member of her artist cooperative; Artists’ Gallery Ellicott City, where she currently serves on the Board of Directors and was the head of the marketing and publicity for the gallery from 2022-2024. Amanda also teaches adult art classes at the Columbia Art Center and Howard County Center for the Arts. The artist competes and displays her artwork in regional ‘plein air’ painting competitions, gallery shows, as well as in national juried exhibitions for the Oil Painters of America (OPA) and the American Impressionist Society (AIS).

P A I N T I N G T E C H N I Q U E

Amanda finds the process of oil painting to be expressive in itself, mixing and moving the paint around to get the desired effect. As a representational painter, she is endlessly fascinated by the challenges of piecing together a cohesive image, from one decision to the next. The artist is most inspired by color relationships. Amanda enjoys getting lost in comparing each color and value, trying carefully to preserve the moment; to really see the essence of her subject. She keeps her colors as intuitive as possible, sticking with her initial impressions. Amanda explores a variety of subjects in her work including landscape, still life, and figure.

Amanda’s plein air technique involves careful consideration of her subject, composition, and color through the use of small sketches and a limited palette. She paints on location, within a small window of time of only several hours, to create her plein air works. Sometimes she returns to the same location, at the same time of day to complete her larger paintings.
